Most people who watched the hearings of the confirmation of the current Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos, might think that she looked foolish or clueless about a great many things. Those who know Mrs. DeVos understand that this is not the case, and they also know that while she was annoyed at being made to look the fool, she hasn’t let it get in the way of doing her job. The truth is many in Washington aren’t aware of the true political savvy and determination of the woman who is feared by many in her home-state of Michigan. There, it is common knowledge that she is a political reformer who rewards her allies and makes it hard for those who oppose her.
It’s not that Betsy DeVos is a dirty politician, because that is the furthest thing from the truth. It is that she is a tough woman who stands up for what she believes in and has been doing so for many years. In Michigan, she served as the Chairman for the Michigan Republican Party, and she has also fought for the rights of parents to send their kids to a school of their choosing for many years. While she may not have a lot of experience working within the government, political foes and friends, alike, know that she will learn her way around much quicker than most people would think.
It is true that Betsy DeVos had a rough introduction to the political scene in Washington, but it is also true that she moved right on from it and immediately got to work as the Secretary of Education for the U.S.A. By calling both of the leaders of the largest teachers’ unions to ask for a meeting, she impressed many people. Her comments that most American kids would remain in public schools also lessened some of the fears that Democrats had about her confirmation. This is because she has been a supporter of private and charter schools for years, and for good reason. Public schools in the United States are failing, and she believes that there is a perfectly good alternative that we should be looking at. That alternative is to allow public funds to pay for the tuition of private and charter schools so everyone has access to them.
Betsy DeVos was raised in Holland, Michigan and worked with her father at his auto parts company from time to time. She went to a private school herself as a child and also attended Calvin College, which is a private college, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Economics. She has fought more than thirty years to help American families to have the same opportunities as she did growing up. It is her belief that giving parents educational choice, so they can send their children to a school that they deem safe and a good learning environment, is the best way to fix the failing educational system of the United States. Only time will tell if she will be successful, and many believe that her success is ours too.
